I first met Miriam when I was very early in my photography career. I was working as a photojournalist at The Daily Evergreen and going to school at Washington State University. Miriam found me and hired me to shoot the VIBES Conference she was planning. Ironically, that same day, I had a meeting with a wedding photographer who later became my mentor. Little did I know that five years later I would be a professional wedding photographer and would be hired by Miriam again but this time to take engagement photos of her and her fiancee. It amazing how things work out after all these years.
After some debate over whether to have their engagement session at Gas Works Park or Golden Gardens, Miriam and Ernest went with their gut and we found ourselves at Golden Gardens. It turned our to be a great decision too. We arrived at sunset on a Friday afternoon. Many people were enjoying the start of the weekend by playing volleyball and walking on the beach. Instead of seeing the large crowd as a hindrance I saw it as an opportunity. I included beach volleyball players in the foreground to add some extra action in the photos. It tells a broader story of the dynamic and ever-changing setting we were immersed in. I shared the image with Miriam and Ernest and they loved the creative framing – it is a unique moment for them to remember forever. Golden Gardens always has so much to offer from the amazing view of the Olympics, to the iconic trees near the shore, not to mention the long beach which is best explored barefoot. Together we created some great photos that I’m glad to share with you now from this Golden Garden engagement.
