Here are my favorite Saboteur Bakery food photography and portraits from recent photoshoots with Matt Tinder at his Bremerton Bakery. Back in 2016, I spent an evening photographing an entire night shift with Matt as he prepared the next day’s pastries and bread. Ever since then I have been fortunate enough to fulfill Saboteur bakery’s food photography needs.
Each photoshoot for Saboteur Bakery is a little different, each with a particular goal in mind. Some are strictly food photography, some are just portraits in his bakery, and one was even focused on highlighting a specific ingredient in use.
When Matt needed a portrait for a special pop-up dinner we took all of those photos inside his bakery. Some portraits were in the back by his oven and work station – the place he spends most of his time baking and creating menu items. But my favorite portrait was created in front of his shop at the open communal table. The reflection on the metal top made for a really interesting composition.
During one notable Sabotuer Bakery food photography shoot, we photographed menu items that had one common ingredient: almonds. I photographed all of their in-season pastry items that featured almonds. We took photos of Saboteur’s popular twice-baked almond croissants which has almond slivers sprinkled on top and almond pastry cream in the middle (trust me, there is a reason this pastry is so beloved). Other almond menu items included an almond torte, almond Bostock, and almond financier. Saboteur Bakery featured food photography for magazine contributions and social media content.
During the photoshoots, I would take stylized photos of the finalized pastry, as well as candid photos during the preparation and baking stages. It was a fun challenge to toggle between these different types of photos – resulting in two different stories. One story speaking to the process, and one towards the final product.
The stylized photos offer an elegant and beautiful demonstration of Saboteur Bakery’s product. While the pictures of the pastries being prepared and served to patrons provide a behind the scenes view of the bakery. Photos so close you can almost smell the baked goods.
